About the Course
It is no secret that Michael Jackson was an international star. His unparalleled commercial success and phenomenal talent made him a celebrity all around the world. Millions of people flocked to watch Jackson perform in sell-out tours and following his untimely passing in 2009, Jackson’s art, music and creative works have spawned a brand new billion-dollar industry. However, despite Jackson’s unmatched fame and artistic contribution, several questions remain…
Who (or what) was Michael Jackson?
How and why did he create his art?
What exactly happened to him and his representation over the course of his career?
What does Michael Jackson mean to us now?
We begin with an introduction to Jackson’s life, his speeches, his poetry, his autobiographies and his music. Then we consider Jackson’s music and films as a reflection of his cultural significance. We will proceed through Jackson’s artistic canon, visiting key works of art and the contexts in which they were created. By the end, it is my wish that we have all been refined through a masterclass in creativity.

Introduction to Michael Jackson Studies Online Course
Diaries can be powerful tools for learning and change. This week introduces your Michael Jackson Diary, and introduces the first set of key readings for you to explore your thoughts and ideas around Michael Jackson, and myths around the man.
This week is dedicated to Jackson’s musical creations. You will be inspired to “read” a range of albums, song-by-song and use your MJ Diary (see last week’s set task) to note your thoughts and feelings on the music, its tenor, its creativity and any ideas that it brings to mind for you.
This lesson is dedicated to Jackson’s musical creations, ‘Bad’ and ‘Dangerous’. The Michael Jackson Diary process is used to carry out in-depth research of Jackson’s albums and the context in which they were made. In addition, we go further by examining Jackson’s book of poetry, ‘Dancing the Dream’, along with the allegations made against him in 1993.
The next trio of albums: ‘HIStory (Disc 2)’, ‘Blood on the Dance Floor (Tracks 1-5)’ and ‘Invincible’, showcase Jackson’s transition into adulthood and fatherhood. In this time he became a fully-fledged activist and human rights campaigner and his pleas for change become screams. This lesson we explore how he transformed his own trials into microphones for the voiceless.
Over the last five lessons you have been encouraged to delve into Michael Jackson’s various personas, his earlier music and his later musical catalog. Now is your opportunity to put everything you have learned to use by being creative yourself.
